After a three term hiatus, I’m again teaching the advanced writing class – now call Strategic PR Communication. As part of that class, I publish a list of my favorite posts from the week for students to choose from and respond to on their own blogs. While the list is specifically for the class, I hope that other visitors will enjoy, too.
Why... 
Week 1 is not for wussies. We have to move and move fast.
1. Sign up for a PROpenMic account.
2. Review the links and information about the previous course that did a PROpenMic takeover.
3. Review PROpenMic with a partner. Create a site map that outlines each of the parts of the site. Start with a mind map-esque map, then move to an outline. Doing both will help you visualize how the site works.

I recently spoke with some high school students at West Albany High School in Oregon about what it means to work in public relations. Talk about a challenge!
As part of my presentation, I talked about the core skills that it takes to do this job well. Bear with me, I was talking to high schoolers, so this was over-simplified, but the five skills I shared with them were:

During this class, you will prepare messages in clear, concise terms for strategic communication applications. You will learn to communicate in ways that connect with publics using a variety of material. You will exercise advanced communication skills by delivering messages in an appropriate persona, tone, voice and style that will also retain audiences’ attention. You will develop knowledge for assessing whether social media are appropriate for particular situations, and you will learn rules for engaging in online communication with publics. Through this course you will discover in both traditional communication and in social media the powerful influence of strategic communication.
