I have had more than one request from young professionals or soon-to-be graduates who do not have or will not get a PR degree and are interested in working in PR in some capacity. So do you have to have a degree in PR to do this work? Nope. In fact, I’d venture a guess that the clear majority of folks working in PR don’t have PR degrees. A career in PR is often the result of a circuitous path. Disclaimer: I have a PR degree. My students in the School of Journalism and Communication at the University of Oregon will all have PR degrees. Having a PR degree gives you the language of the industry and a unique approach to the work and our program at the UofO is very focused on real world activities and training strategic, creative thinkers. With that said… What can you do to move... Continue Reading

You can find him on Facebook or via email at: anthony(at)staccatodesign.com After hearing countless tales of unemployment woes and an overall industry hiring freeze, that I feel it is important to reach out to those who may be losing hope of finding that golden job. I read a lot. Not much for pleasure, it seems, but between research articles, books for class, assignments and Web content, I read a lot. And I’m often frustrated with dense paragraphs, hard-to-decipher thesaurus-speak and unclear emphases. I have some instincts and some knowledge by osmosis of basic design principles that apply to making your copy reader friendly. That’s the part of the equation that we’re going to chat about today. The other part is that your writing should be concise and meticulously on point. Every word, every sentence, every paragraph has purpose. I read assignments like I’m a member of the audience it’s intended for. The assignments I’m reading this fall are mostly meant for clients (reports, plans, etc.). Once you’ve edited and reedited, these tips can help your message get through, regardless of who you’re trying to reach. Befriend white space – the space without words on the... Continue Reading

Twitter, the microblogging tool, is becoming increasingly important for PR students and young professionals. The smart people are already on Twitter and building their brand, creating relationships and gaining knowledge. But if you’re not and you’re thinking about it. Here are my favorite posts. Robert French from Auburn University asked his Twitter network recently what value they find in participating. The responses tended to fall in a handful of categories: networking following news finding breaking stories (before MSM gets them) opportunity to meet people you’d not have a chance to meet, otherwise connecting with the industry discovering new trends/ideas experimenting with new tools finding internships/jobs news organizations use Twitter to find leads You can see all the tweets here. All of those things are true for me! But twitter is not valuable unless you participate and build a network that extends beyond your circle of friends. So to get started:... Continue Reading
